CNN and other news agencies reported today that Iranian President Mahmoud "Mr. Nuke" Ahmadinejad would like to debate the American President, George W. Bush.
My first thought - this would rock!
My second thought - Bush would probably get whupped in a debate!
My third thought - How about a six-shooter showdown at high-noon? (my money's on Bush)
My fourth thought - Bush doesn't need to debate you! He can nuke Iran back a few thousand years.
My last thought - Why not? Is Ahmadinejad going to use special television based brainwashing techniques to turn all of the US into radical Islamists? Or can we show the world that we're not afraid of open democratic debate. Ahmadinejad wants to talk - so let's talk. Is our goal blowing up Iran to bits or is our goal a cold war style disarmament and dismantling of fascist Islamist regimes? Reagan talked to to Soviets - why can't Bush follow his lead? Reagan had all of his options on the table, including turning the Soviet Union into an ashtray, which nobody wanted (except for all the Dr. Strangeloves).
A Bush-Ahmadinejad debate would be fascinating, wierd, interesting and would be a major television event (there could even be special pins and licensing like the Olympics). Maybe this even leads to other world leaders facing off, rather than sending impressionable teenagers to do battle for them. The debate could have call-in votes (American Idol style), with the winner getting a cool record deal or world peace.
Let's put our leaders to work and make 'em sweat.
